Each Year the Arizona Breastfeeding Coalition, Northern Region, presents a “Gold Star” Award to a person or entity who exemplifies the World Health Organization’s goals of promoting, protecting, and supporting breastfeeding in the Flagstaff community. The recipient will be announced during World Breastfeeding Week. To vote for your favorite breastfeeding supporter, see the poll on our Facebook timeline
Prior winners of this award include:
2004: Northern AZ University for being an employer who supported breastfeeding in the workplace
2005: WL Gore for also supporting breastfeeding in the workplace
2006: Morning Glory Café and the Coconino County Health Department for allowing breastfed babies to come to the workplace
2007: City of Flagstaff for adopting the public breastfeeding ordinance
2008: Dr. Nina Souders for her outstanding support for mothers in her practice at North Country Health Center
2009: FMC Women and Infant’s Center for “Banning the Bags” distributed by formula companies
2010: Dr. Sheila Mackell of Mountainview Pediatrics for consistently using evidence-based policies, practices, and support to make a difference in helping families meet their breastfeeding goals.
2011: Dr. Karen Stepan, who passed away in 2011. She played a major role in establishing The Breastfeeding Center and the Breastfeeding Task Force in Flagstaff
2012: Coconino County WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Program
